IP address control The value of any network is correlated to the number of direct users it has. A network of only two is nearly useless, whereas a network of many thousands or millions can be very powerful. Through tracking of the number of IP addresses any particular network controls, we get an idea of relative percentages of Internet traffic that a given network probably handles. IP address control is one factor in the calculation of the KNODES index.

Peering The value of a given network on the Internet is also correlated the number of indirect users it has. Because the Internet is really a "network of networks", the value of any network will depend on the number and size of the networks with which it has peering arrangements. Peers add value to a network by providing access to the users on its own network, plus the access allowed through the other networks with which it peers.
